The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
