Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Secures First Championship in Over Two Years
Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 titles have been earned on hard surfaces
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev won his initial championship for 882 days with victory over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open final.
The athlete, a ex- top-ranked player, has had a difficult period, achieving just one win at the major tournaments and experiencing a setback at the US Open.
Medvedev's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and issues with his service game in especial - caused him dropping out of the elite rankings and eventually separating with former coach Cervara.
Now working with his coach and Rohan Goetzke, he has steadily progressed in the recent weeks - peaking in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over Frenchman Moutet.
This marks the player's first trophy following the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hardcourt from spring of the previous year.
The win also indicates he has secured 21 titles at twenty-one distinct events.
"For the first time I am participating in a event with my both daughters simultaneously, so to win a title is really nice," stated world number 14 Medvedev.
"This championship is in honour of my child my daughter, because the initial championship I got when my older daughter my daughter was delivered was for her."
The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his past six finals, featuring in Halle earlier this year.
His retrieving strategy and regular outbursts on the tennis court had caused some to doubt if his skill to play at the highest level was concluded.
However the player has made changes in the last few weeks, making an effort to approach the net and compete positively, backed up by an better serving game.
The champion came back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the challenging opponent, securing four of the final five games to take the lead.
The pair traded breaks in the following set before the challenger, attempting for his initial professional title, seized the initiative to force a decider.
The opponent defended four initial opportunities in a competitive final set before the champion secured a break to that score to serve for the match.
Appropriately, he secured victory with a rally at the net area, with the Frenchman failing to manage a volley after a lengthy match.
